Opera Star Angela Meade to Perform at 2017 Waterford Concert Series

Waterford Concert Series

Waterford, Va. August 10, 2017.

Opera star Angela Meade will replace Ying Fang in concert Sunday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. in the Waterford Old School, 40222 Fairfax St., in historic Waterford, the Waterford Concert Series announced today.

In a happy case of “musical chairs,” soprano Angela Meade will sing the concert originally scheduled for her colleague Ying Fang, who has been called to Europe to appear as Pamina in Mozart’s “Magic Flute.” Both Ms. Meade and Ms. Fang are Metropolitan Opera sopranos. The two are scheduled to sing roles as sister sorceresses in the Washington National Opera production of Handel’s “Alcina” this November.

Hailed as “the most talked about soprano of her generation” (Opera News), Angela Meade has astounded opera fans since she won the Met Opera National Council Audition in 2007. She made her Met debut the following year as Elvira in Verdi’s “Ernani,” stepping in for another soprano who fell ill. Her other Met Opera roles have been the countess in “Le Nozze di Figaro,” Alice Ford in “Falstaff,” Leonora in “Il Trovatore” and the title roles in “Anna Bolena” and “Norma.” Ms. Meade has appeared in major opera houses abroad and at home, including singing a memorable “Norma” with the Washington National Opera in 2013. She gave a “powerhouse” performance at the Washington Concert Opera 30th Anniversary Gala last year.

Angela Meade “…has exceptional dynamic control, able to move from floating pianissimos to sudden dramatic swells. The coloratura effects — rapid runs, trills, delicate turns, and so on — are handled with uncommon ease,” according to The New Yorker critic. She has won both the Met Opera’s Beverly Sills Artists Award (2012) and the Richard Tucker Award (2011).

Sponsors for this concert are Virginia Friend and Charlotte Gollobin.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $15 for students, and children 12 and under are free. Seating is limited: advanced ticket purchase recommended.
