Washington International Horse Show Selects Loudoun Therapeutic Riding for Honor & Service Award

The WIHS Honor & Service Award recognizes a horse, individual, or organization that best demonstrates the values of honor and service.

LOVETTSVILLE, VA — The Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation will be honored on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Washington International Horse Show with the 2024 Honor & Service Award, presented by the EQUUS Foundation. LTR provides a variety of equine-assisted services for children and adults with physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges including therapeutic riding, therapeutic driving, and groundwork exercises to promote well-being and community inclusion.

The WIHS Honor & Service Award was created in 2013 to honor the Caisson Platoon’s Klinger, a special horse who has touched the lives of many through his life of service with the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon. Klinger has served as the official escort to the President of the United States and led the Presidential Inaugural Parade. The EQUUS Foundation and United States Equestrian Federation inducted Klinger into the Horse Stars Hall of Fame for his service.

“We are honored to be selected as this year’s recipient of the Honor & Service Award,” said LTR Executive Director Laura Smith. “We say miracles happen every day in our barn with our participants. As the first therapeutic riding facility in Virginia, we lean on 50 years of experience to provide the highest level of compassionate service to help our most vulnerable community members reach their highest potential.”

Founded in 1974, LTR was the first Path International Premier Accredited Center in Virginia, meaning it meets the highest level of standards across its administration, facility, program, and services. Over 13,700 participants have benefited from this program through partnerships with 115 therapy horses and over 5,000 volunteers. Through the EQUUS Foundation, LTR is also an accredited Mentor organization, meaning that it operates at the highest standards for business and equine welfare practices in accordance with EQUUS Foundation guidelines.
