Of Note: What’s Going On

Music: After a successful inaugural season, the Middleburg Concert Series returns with its first concert of 2016 on Sunday, March 13 at 4 p.m. with a visit to the baroque era. Concerts are held at the Middleburg United Methodist Church at 15 West Washington Street and admission is free.

The program will include selections by Bach, Handel and Poglietti and feature baroque and modern trumpet artist Dr. Douglas Wilson. He holds degrees in music from Yale, Oberlin and the University of Oklahoma and has performed with numerous concert ensembles.

The goal of the series is to provide the opportunity for area residents and visitors to enjoy virtuoso performances worthy of the Kennedy Center without the need to travel long distances. The Warrenton Chorale’s Handbell Ensemble &Youth Chorale will hold a concert on Friday, April 22 starting at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 23 at 3 p.m. at the Warrenton Presbyterian Church. Tickets will be available on April 6, with a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $5 for children.

There will be music, lots of sweet music at the Middleburg Community Center the next two months.

The Loudoun Symphony Orchestra will present the concert “Masters and Miniatures” on March 12 from 3-5 p.m. On the evening of April 9, there will be a Loudoun Symphony Gala at MCC, followed on April 15 by the season’s first “Concert on the Steps” from 5:30-7 p.m. including a band, light bites and refreshments available.

The Loudoun Ballet Company (LBC) will hold its first ever “Sleeping Beauty Tutu Fashion Show” on Saturday, April 2 at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg. Tickets are available online only at www.loudounballet.org through March 29. 

This fundraising event features chances to win girl- and doll-sized replicas of LBC’s stunning Sleeping Beauty costumes, handmade by the ballet company seamstress.Ticket prices are $45 for children 12 and under and $55 for adults. The silent auction begins at noon, with the fashion show and luncheon from 1-3 p.m. 

Community Center: Other MCC events include a community art auction, free and open to the public on April 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. featuring wooden plates decorated by local artists. And don’t forget adult yoga, and lots of activities for pre-schoolers. The MCC also has put together a spring break, three-day mini-horse camp at Stonelea Farm March 21-23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $250. Racing: Mark your calendars for the 2016 point-to-point season.

On Saturday, March 12, the Blue Ridge Hunt point-to-point will be run at Woodley Farm in Berryville starting at noon. Call 540-550-7015 or go to blueridgehunt.org.

On Saturday, March 26, the Piedmont Fox Hounds point-to-point will be held at the Salem course in Upperville starting at 1 p.m. Call 540-592-7100. And on Sunday, April 3,  the Orange County Hounds point-to-point will be contested at Locust Hill Farm in Middleburg. Call 540-687-5552 or contact [email protected].

And on the steeplechasing front, make extra certain to plan ahead for the Middleburg Spring Races, Saturday, April 23 at Glenwood Park. Post time is 1 p.m. For tickets, call 540-687-6545.

National Sporting Library & Museum: Join the NSLM for “Sunday Sketch” on the first Sunday of the month, from 2-4 p.m. The next session is April 3 with artist Mary Jennings. Each month a local art teacher or artist leads a sketching session in the art galleries, guiding participants on style, composition or another aspect of drawing. Supplies (pencils, paper, sketch boards and clipboards) will be provided.

In celebration of its exhibition “Line Dance: The Art of Fly Fishing” by Peter Corbin, the NSLM is hosting a public reception for the artist on Saturday, March 19. Join Corbin for a coffee reception from 10-10:30 a.m. and follow him on a custom tour of the exhibition. Middleburg Library: On Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m., there will be a program “Getting Publishers to Say Yes!” with longtime author and writing coach David Hazard. Learn what literary agents and publishing review committees look for so you can present the best, most professional pitch and proposal possible.

Teen Tech Week at the library is March 12 at 1 p.m. The program includes creating technology by recycling old CDs and tech materials into owl ornaments. A session on Native Raptors—owls, hawks and falcons—is scheduled Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m. with naturalist Kent Knowles of the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia.

Quality Quacking:  Get ready to focus on our feathered friends when the Loudoun chapter of Ducks Unlimited holds its annual banquet March 12 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Purcellville Pavillion. The price of admission is $60 per person for an event that includes a silent auction and raffle. It’s $100 per couple and $20 for youngsters. Go to duloudouncounty@gmail for further information.
