NPR’s Rachel Martin Named Goodyear Fellow, Spoke at Foxcroft School March 28

Rachel Martin, host of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and award-winning correspondent who has covered stories ranging from the War in Afghanistan to the 2006 World Cup, has been named a Alison Harrison Goodyear Fellow at Foxcroft School and spoke at the all-girls’ boarding and day school on Thursday, March 28. The public was invited to attend the talk entitled “Finding Your Voice,” which was held in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library.
Martin has hosted Morning Edition since December 2016 and also hosts NPR’s morning news podcast Up First, along with Steve Inskeep and David Greene. Previously, she hosted Weekend Edition Sunday and was National Security Correspondent for NPR, covering both defense and intelligence issues. Martin traveled regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan with the Secretary of Defense to report on the wars the U.S. was waging, and also reported on controversial military issues such as the debate over women fighting in combat units and the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
“We are so honored that Rachel Martin has accepted our invitation,” said Head of School Catherine S. McGehee, in making the announcement. “Her professional journey as a journalist, covering news around the globe, is very much aligned with our mission to empower each student to explore her unique voice and to develop the skills, confidence and courage to share it with the world. I believe her experiences will provide an inspiring message for our students.”
A native of Idaho Falls, ID, Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Puget Sound and a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University. She began her career as a producer and reporter at KQED, a public radio station in San Francisco. Since then she has helped launch NPR’s experimental show, The Bryant Park Project and served as an NPR foreign correspondent based in Berlin. Germany; Beginning as a freelancer, she reported from Afghanistan as far back as 2003, filing stories on reconstruction following the U.S. invasion, the first democratic presidential election, women’s issues, among other compelling subjects. In 2007, as NPR’s religion correspondent, Martin did a piece on Islam in America that was named “Best Radio Feature” by the Religion News Writers Association.
The Alison Harrison Goodyear Fellowship Program brings women and men who have achieved renown in the fields of the arts, humanities, science, or public affairs to Foxcroft to participate in discussions and seminars with students. Past Goodyear Fellows include James Baker III, Mary Pipher, Doris Kearns Goodwin, David Gergen, and the Capitol Steps.
