The Sporting Art auction

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY: Cross Gate Gallery, in conjunction with Keeneland Association is delighted to announce the fifth annual Sporting Art Auction. Presenting the highest caliber of fine sporting art, American paintings, and sculpture, the auction will be held on Sunday, November 19 at 2:00pm.

The selectively curated auction will consist of 175 lots dating from the 19th century to present day. Artists include John F. Herring, Jr., Sir Alfred J. Munnings, Henry Stull, and the contemporary master Andre Pater.

The auction comes fresh on the heels of Pater’s highly successful Andre Pater: In a Sporting Light exhibition at the National Sporting Library and Museum. Two lots in the auction were featured in the exhibition including the painting that graces the cover of the catalogue, Heading Home (pictured right). In addition to those two works, eight other pieces by Pater will be offered.

Beginning with his first one-man show at Cross Gate Gallery in 1992, Andre Pater’s work has been prized by collectors for his mastery of animal anatomy and skilled use of light. His subject matter varies, ranging from Native American warriors to fox hunting and pastoral scenes, but all reflect his skill and enthusiasm for his work.
